Privacy policy
Last updated 2 October 2026
In short: your accounts and transactions are kept on your phone. Topic Finance shows no ads and never sells your data. It uses Google services for anonymous usage statistics and for payments, and, only if you sign in with Google, for a backup to your own Google Drive and for a budget you share with other people.
Who we are
Topic Finance, listed on Google Play as "Topic Finance: Expense Tracker", is an Android app made by TopicDev. In this policy, "we" means TopicDev, which is responsible for the data described here.
What stays on your phone
Everything you enter is stored in the app's private storage on your phone: your accounts and balances, transactions, categories, budgets and limits, subscriptions, recurring items and your settings. We don't receive any of it.
- App lock: if you turn on the fingerprint or face lock, Android checks it. The app only learns whether the check passed; your fingerprint or face never reaches the app.
- Exports: PDF, CSV and Excel files you export are saved to your phone's Downloads folder. They only go elsewhere if you share them yourself.
- Android backup: depending on your phone's settings, Android may include the app's data in your device backup to your Google account. That backup is managed by Google, not by us.
Usage statistics
The app uses Google's Firebase Analytics to understand, in general terms, how it is used, so we can fix problems and improve it. Firebase collects this automatically:
- a random app-instance ID, and the advertising ID provided by Google Play services
- your device model, Android version, app version and language
- your country or region, worked out from your IP address
- when you first open the app, your sessions and the screens you view
- purchase events, without payment details
It doesn't include your name, your email or any of your financial data. We don't show ads, and we don't use this information for advertising. Google keeps it for up to 14 months. You can reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone's settings. See the Google privacy policy and Firebase privacy information.
Purchases
Premium, monthly, yearly or for life, is bought through Google Play. Google handles the payment, and we never see your card or payment details. The app asks Google Play whether you have an active purchase so it can unlock Premium. The 21-day free trial is counted on your phone, from the day you first open the app.
Google sign-in (optional)
You only need to sign in with Google to use the Drive backup or a shared budget. When you do, the app receives your name, email address and a Google user ID, and creates a sign-in record for you with Firebase Authentication. Your name and email are shown on your profile in the app. You can sign out at any time.
Google Drive backup (optional)
When you choose to back up, or accept the backup reminder, the app saves a copy of your data to a hidden app folder in your own Google Drive. Only Topic Finance can read that folder; we have no access to it. The copy is protected by Google's security but isn't additionally encrypted by the app. Restoring a backup replaces the data on your phone.
Shared budget (optional)
A shared budget lets people you invite see and edit the same budget. Its data is stored in Firebase Realtime Database, in Google's European data centre in Belgium: the transactions, accounts, subscriptions, recurring items, categories and budget limits you share, each marked with the user ID of the person who added it and the time. Every member can see everything in the shared budget, and only members can.
Invites use a six-character code, which expires after 24 hours and is deleted once used. If you leave a shared budget, your membership is removed; what you added stays for the other members until they delete it, or until you ask us to delete it.
Currency rates
To convert between currencies, the app downloads exchange rates from Frankfurter, a free, open source rates service. The request contains no personal data, though, like any website, Frankfurter can see your IP address.
Notifications, reviews and updates
Reminders are created on your phone and need no server. Google Play may ask you to rate the app or offer you an update; those prompts are handled by Google Play.
What we never do
- show advertising, or use your data for advertising
- sell or rent your data, or share it with data brokers
- read your financial data, your backup or your shared budget, except to delete it when you ask
Why we use your data
We use the data described here to provide the app and the features you choose (Drive backup and shared budget), to process purchases, and, because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the app working well, for usage statistics. Where the law gives you that right, you can object to usage statistics by writing to us.
Where your data is processed
Google may process data from its services, such as Firebase and Google Play, in the European Union, the United States and other countries, under the safeguards described in its own privacy policy.
How long we keep it
- Data on your phone: until you delete it or uninstall the app.
- Your Drive backup: until you delete it from your Google Drive.
- Shared budget data and your sign-in record: until you or other members delete it, or you ask us to.
- Usage statistics: up to 14 months.
Your rights and deleting your data
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, to object to how we use it, and to complain to your data protection authority. To delete your data, including your sign-in record and shared budget data, follow the steps on Delete your Topic Finance data, or write to us.
Children
Topic Finance isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll publish the new version here with a new date, and mention important changes in the app's release notes.
